The Waffle Stitch

WAFFLE STITCH OVERVIEW

The Waffle Stitch is a beautiful textured stitch that looks like a Belgian waffle.

It is a great choice for dishcloths, washcloths, pillowcases, and blankets. If you are into amigurumi (adorable crochet toys), then you can use this stitch to create some realistic waffles.

The pattern is made up of regular double crochet stitches and front post double crochet stitches and is a two-row repeat.

First, let’s start with detailed photo instructions. You can skip this and scroll down to the bottom of the page where you will find the written pattern.

Materials: For this tutorial, I chose a light worsted merino wool yarn and a number 4 crochet hook.

Foundation chain: Chain a multiple of 3 + 2 stitches for the turning chain.  The turning chain will count as the first double crochet. One “square” of the waffle is formed by 3 stitches. In the example below I have 21+2=23 stitches.

Note: You can chain the standard 3 stitches for the turning chain, I just feel that the edge looks neater with the 2 stitches.

Row 1: Double crochet in the 4th st from the hook and in each chain to the end.

Row 2: Chain 2, turn your work.

Front post double crochet around the post of the stitch below.

Double crochet in the next 2 stitches.

Repeat 1 front post double crochet and 2 double crochet until the last 2 stitches.

Front post double crochet. Double crochet in the top of the chain.

Row 3: Chain 2, turn your work.

Double crochet in the next stitch, front post double crochet around the next two stitches.

Repeat 1 double crochet and 2 front post double crochet to the last 2 stitches.

Double crochet in the next stitch and double crochet in the top of the turning chain.

At this point you can see the waffle pattern starting to form:

Next, simply continue repeating rows 2 and 3 until your desired length.

Abbreviations:

st = stitch

ch = chain

dc = double crochet

fpdc = front post double crochet

Waffle stitch pattern:

Chain a multiple of 3+2. Turning chain counts as the 1st stitch.

Row 1: dc in the 4^th st from the hook and in each chain to the end.

Row 2: ch 2, turn, *fpdc, dc in next 2 st* repeat from * to * until the last 2 sts, fpdc in next st, dc in top of ch.

Row 3: ch 2, turn, *dc, fpdc in next 2 st* repeat from * to * until the last 2 sts, dc in next st, dc in top of ch.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you’ve reached your desired length.
