Hat overview
The Fireplace Hat is a ribbed beanie. It is knit in 2×2 rib from the bottom up in the round without seams, and it has a folded brim. The hat is knit with medium-weight yarn.
The hat is easy to knit. You will knit a long ribbed tube using circular knitting needles and gradually shape the crown.
You will find the knitting instructions below. Enjoy!

Supplies
To knit this hat, you will need the following supplies:
- Yarn: ~90g (3.2 oz) medium-weight yarn (category #4). I used Drops Nepal in the color walnut (mix 8917). It’s a blend of 65% wool and 35% alpaca. If you don’t have the mentioned yarn at hand, here are similar yarn options:
- 4mm (US 6) 40cm (16″) circular knitting needles
- 4mm (US6) 80cm (32″) circular needles or a set of double-pointed needles (for the crown decreases).
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- 4 stitch markers (one for the beginning of the round, and 4 for crown decreases)

FIREPLACE HAT KNITTING PATTERN

Cast on
CO on 96 sts using the Long-tail cast-on method or the one you prefer.
Join in the round, being careful not to twist the sts (place a marker if you wish to mark the beginning of the round).
I prefer using the invisible join method:
Step 1: CO 96 + 1 extra stitch.

Step 2: Slip the first st purlwise from the left needle to the right needle.
Step 3: Bring the second st from the right needle over the top of the first st (the one that we have passed from the left needle)
Step 4: Put that slipped st from the right needle to the left needle: 96 sts left. Pull on the strands to tighten.

Turn the knitting so the wrong side of the cast-on is facing you. This way, the neat side of the cast-on will be visible when the brim is folded.

Hat
Round 1: *K2, P2* to end.
Repeat round 1 until the hat measures 21cm / 8.25″.

On the last round, place 3 additional stitch markers as follows:
*24sts, PM* 3 times, 24 sts.
Crown
Switch to double-pointed needles or circular needles with a longer cable (for the magic loop method) when necessary.
Round 1: *Work in 2×2 rib to 2sts before marker, P2Tog* 4 times.
Repeat round 1 until there are 16 sts left (finish with round 1).

Finishing
Cut the yarn, leaving approximately a 15cm (6″) long tail. Thread a tapestry needle and draw the tail tightly through the remaining stitches. Weave in all loose ends.

Wet block the finished item to set the finished size and even out the stitches.
Simply soak the knitted item in lukewarm water with some soak wash for 10-15 minutes. Lift it from the water and gently squeeze the excess water out. Next, lay it on a clean towel (make sure it doesn’t transfer color), and roll it up to remove moisture.
Lay the item on a clean and dry towel (that doesn’t transfer color) and let it dry. Your knitting will look much better after this.

Question, this follow pattern as written, second row of decreases, 3 sts before marker are 2 knit sta 1 purl st. So what is the decrease , ( k 2 tog purl 1 ) or k1 purl 2 tog but one of the sts is a k st. Anyone who knows I thank you n advance
It is p2tog no matter what those sts are -knit or purl, on each round you will work to 2 sts before marker and purl those 2 sts together, so on this exact round it is your second option: k1, and purl 2 together (one purl st and one knit st).
Thanks, but you just said do the decreases, every row is that correct. Makes sense as finished hat is to long with dc Every other row. My work is 11 “ now. Once again thanks for answering
