“Work sts as they appear” means you work the stitches based on the row below. If you see a knit stitch – you knit, if you see a purl stitch – you purl. In this case, you’ll K3, P2, K3, P9, K3, P2, K3.

Trying to make this pattern-it is so pretty!! However, for the even rows, can you explain a little better “King as appears”? Does that mean knitting across, or do I need to figure out which stitches to knit and which to purl? Knitting across looks really odd, so I’m pretty sure that’s not right.
