Hi, Amelia!
I've rechecked the instructions, they seem correct - there are 129sts. The pattern goes like this:
Right border= 19sts
Diamond = 27sts
Lace = 5sts
Diamond = 27sts
Lace = 5sts
Diamond = 27sts
Left border = 19sts
It is a total of 129 sts.
Maybe the confusion is in K2tog and SSK? Maybe you count each as 2 sts? Technically you work 2, but you end up with 1st.
Hope this helps!

I'm not sure if I'm missing something here, but how does it work that the first row of the actual pattern requires you to knit 144 stitches to do "right border, diamond row 1, lace border, diamond row 1, lace border, diamond row 1, left border", but we're only casting on 129 stitches...?
