PATTERN OVERVIEW
The Hillock hat is a fitted textured beanie, that features Double Moss stitch. It’s an easy 4-row repeat pattern, and the hat knits up pretty quickly.
This hat is knitted from the bottom-up, in the round on circular needles, so it has no seams.
The pattern is easily adjustable to fit smaller or larger sizes.
You will find the knitting pattern below. Enjoy!

Brim
With 4mm (US 6) needles cast on 84+1 stitches (a total of 85 stitches). I am using the Long Tail cast on method.
Join in the round using the invisible join method, being careful not to twist the stitches:
Step 1: Slip the first stitch from the left-hand needle to the right-hand needle purlwise.
Step 2: Bring the second stitch from the right-hand needle over the top of the first stitch (the one, that we have passed from the left needle).
Step 3: Put that slipped stitch from the right needle back to the left one. You will have 84 stitches left.
Pull on the strands to tighten it a little bit and place a marker.
Alternative: You can also cast on the required 84 stitches and join them in the round by just starting to knit, but in that case, a little gap will form in the first round.
Ribbing
Round 1: *K1, P1*, to the end of the round.
Repeat Round 1 until the ribbing measures 5cm (2 inches).
Body
Switch to 5mm (US 8) needles and evenly increase the number of stitches from 84 to 88.
Increase round: *K21, M1*, to the end of the round (88 sts).
The body of the hat is knit in Double Moss stitch.
Round 1 – 2: *K2, P2*, to the end of the round.
Round 3-4: *P2, K2*, to the end of the round.
Repeat rounds 1-4 until the hat measures 18.5cm (7.3 inches) from the cast on edge.
Crown
Round 1: *P2tog, K2*, to the end of the round (66 stitches).
Round 2: *P1, K2*, to the end of the round (66 stitches).
Round 3: *K1, P2tog*, to the end of the round (44 stitches).
Round 4: *K1, P1*, to the end of the round (44 stitches).
Round 5: *K2tog*, to the end of the round (22 stitches).
Round 6: Knit all (22 stitches).
Round 7: *K2tog*, to the end of the round (11 stitches).
FINISHING
Cut the yarn, leaving approximately a 20cm ( 8 inches) long tail. Thread the yarn onto a tapestry needle and thread it through the remaining stitches. Weave in any loose ends.
If you wish, add a faux fur pom pom or create one yourself.

Hi. Thank you for the pattern. Is it suppose to be an increase to 92? 90 doesn’t end with P2, ends with K2. Thank you!
Hi, thank you for finding a mistake! I’ve corrected 90 to 88, and also corrected the decrease part! My bad!
Thank you! I’m working on my second one 🙂
Thank you for this pattern. I’ve been searching for months for something I like. Bev Smith
You’re welcome, thank you for your comment!
I love this pattern, made it for my Granddaughter and sister. Both loved it! I used a faux pom pom for both and it made the hat stand out. Thank you for sharing.
That’s wonderful, thank you for your feedback!
When I working on the decrease on round 5, I end up with 22 stitches instead of 21. This has happened to me 2 times! What am I doing wrong?
Hi I don’t understand what the increase means k21, m1 to end of round.
Hi, in this round you will increase the number of stitches (from 84 to 88). To do so you will knit the first 21 stitches and make one stitch:
1. Pick up the bar between the stitches with the left-hand needle from front to back;
2. Knit this bar through the back loop (you have increased one stitch).
Now knit the next 21 stitches, and make one again. Repeat this until the end of the round – a total of four repeats, and you’ll have 88 stitches.
Hi Mirella,
You say this hat is a women’s medium but can be easily adjustable to fit smaller or larger sizes.
Do you have a guide for how to do this? (E.g. how many stitches to cast on and increase to? How long to measure the hat before decreasing?)
Thanks! 🙂
