How to knit a simple beanie hat

This is a very basic beanie hat and a fairly quick and easy knitting project. It is knit from merino wool, which is both soft and warm. The simple design gives it a sporty and casual look.

PIN this for later!

Materials

Yarn: Merino (mine is Super Soft from Lana Gatto)
Weight/ Length: 50g (1 3/4 oz) ~ 125 mt (137 yds)
Content: 100% merino extrafine
Gauge: 10×10cm ( 4×4 inches) 21 stitches x 30 rows
Needles: 3.5mm (US 4) / 40cm (16inch) circular needles
3.5mm double point needles (US 4)
Stitch markers
Tapestry needle

Beanie size: 55-57cm (21.5-26inches), not a tight fit

ABBREVIATIONS

k – knit
k2tog – knit 2 stitches together
ssk – slip, slip, knit 2 stitches together
** – repeat instructions in between the asterisk

NOTES

To get the accurate size and fit, I recommend you to knit, wash and dry a gauge swatch before you start knitting the beanie. Without a doubt, merino wool is great, but it expands often after it is washed so it is very important to keep that in mind. Use the same yarn and needles, that you plan to use for this project and knit at least a 10 x 10 cm swatch, wash it in luke-warm water with a mild shampoo. Don’t squeeze or twist the swatch, let it dry flat on a towel.

BRIM

Using circular needles cast on 108 stitches plus 1 additional stitch, that is needed to join the work in the round smoothly, that’s a total of 109 stitches. Make sure stitches are not twisted.

Stitches on a needle

Join the work in the round. To do so:
1. Slip the first stitch purlwise from the left needle to the right needle.
2. Bring the second stitch from the right needle over the top of the first stitch (the one, that we have passed from the left needle)
3. Put that slipped stitch from the right needle back to the left one.
Pull on the strands to tighten it a little bit and place a marker.

Alternative: You can also cast on the required 108 stitches and join them in the round by just starting to knit, but in that case, a little gap will form in the first round.

BODY

Knit in the round for 19 cm (7.5 inches).

Note: While you knit the edge of the beanie will curl up, but it will straighten after you have washed the finished piece.

CROWN

Switch to double-pointed needles and divide the stitches evenly between 4 needles (27 stitches on each needle). Now you have 4 sections, place a marker on the first section, it will help you determine easily when the decrease round begins and ends. We will be decreasing the number of stitches in every other round.

Row 1: * k1, k2tog, k to last 2 stitches, ssk*
Row 2: knit all

Repeat rows 1 and 2 before you have 3 stitches left on each needle (a total of 12 stitches).

FINISHING

Cut the yarn leaving a 10- 15cm tail and thread the end on a yarn needle. Pull the yarn through all the remaining stitches purlwise, pull taut to close the hole. Weave in ends.

WASHING

Congratulations, you have finished your hat, but that’snot it – you need to wash it. Since this is merino wool – hand-wash only. Wash the hat in luke-warm water with a mild shampoo carefully – do not twist or squeeze it. Lay it flat on a towel and straighten the hat and the crown carefully, you can also put an additional towel on the edge to hold it in place, so it won’t curl.
