To knit this headband you will need the following supplies:

  • Yarn: ~50g (1.8 oz) medium weight yarn (category #4). I used Drops Big Merino in the color lavender (mix 09). It’s 100% merino wool. If you don’t have the mentioned yarn at hand, here are similar yarn options:

Sl wyf – slip stitch purlwise with yarn in front

The first and last 3 stitches form the i-cord edging. You will knit the first 3 stitches of every row, and slip the last 3 stitches of every row.

Row 1: K3, P2, Sl1 wyb, P2, K9, P2, Sl1 wyb, P2, Sl 3 wyf

Row 2, 4, 6, 8: K5, P1, K2, P9, K2, P1, K2, Sl 3 wyf

Row 3: K3, P2, Sl1 wyb, P2, K3, C6F, P2, Sl1 wyb, P2, Sl 3 wyf

Row 5: K3, P2, Sl1 wyb, P2, K9, P2, Sl1 wyb, P2, Sl 3 wyf

Row 7: K3, P2, Sl1 wyb, P2, C6B, K3, P2, Sl1 wyb, P2, Sl 3 wyf

Repeat rows 1-8 sixteen more times (a total of seventeen pattern repeats) or knit until your desired length.

The edges of the headband are sewn together to form a twist and are not visible, so you don’t need to end with a full pattern repeats.

Bind off

Bind off sts in pattern (knit over knit stitches, purl over purl stitches).

Step 1: Work 2, bring the first st over the second one.

Step 2: Work the next st, bring the first st over the second one.

Repeat step 2 until you have 1 stitch left, cut the yarn leaving a 30-40cm / 12-16″ tail to seam the headband. Draw the yarn tail through the last stitch and pull it snug.

You will find a detailed tutorial on how to bind off knitting HERE.

Twist

Step 1: With the right side facing you, bring the shorter edges closer together and fold each edge in half so they look like a “V”.

Step 2: Now insert one edge into another. Make sure, that the yarn tail is on the outside, and not in between the layers.

Step 3: Stitch through all 4 layers of knit fabric back and forth.

Finishing

Weave in all loose ends, and turn the headband the right side out.

Wet block the finished item, this process transforms the stitches, makes them look smoother and neater.

Simply soak the knitted item in lukewarm water with some soak wash for 10-15 minutes. Lift it from the water and gently squeeze the excess water out. Next, lay it on a clean towel, and roll it up to remove moisture.

Pin the item to a blocking board or lay it on a clean and dry towel (make sure it doesn’t transfer color) and let it dry. Your knitting will look much better after this.

The Roots Headband is a comfortable accessory that will keep your ears warm. The headband features two types of simple cables on a reverse stockinette background with i-cord edges. The headband is worked flat and the edges are sewn together.

    1. The headband has an I-cord edge – you will knit the first 3 stitches of every row and you will slip (with yarn IN FRONT) the last 3 stitches of every row. This will create a smooth side edge.

        1. Hi, the instructions for the wrong-side rows (2, 4, 6, and 8) are correct – you should knit the first 3 stitches of every row (on the right and wrong sides), and slip the last 3 stitches purlwise with yarn in front.

    2. Hi

I had the same problem the one side would not work out, so I tried my own way and this work.
      Row 1 , 3, 5, 7 end with WYB
      Row 2,4,6,8 begin P3, K2, P1, K2, P9, K2, P1, K2,SL 3 wyf

      and this work perfectly

      hope this help.

    3. Same Linda! If you noticed there is only one row that starts with knit 5 which is row 2 all the rest start with knit 3 and slip 3. I am not sure if it is just a typo 🙁

      1. This headband has an i-cord edging, that is worked as follows k3 at the beginning of every row, slip the last 3 sts purlwise with yarn in front. It is the same for the right and wrong sides.
All the wrong-side rows (2, 4, 6, 8) should start with k5 – that is k3 (i-cord sts) +k2 (2sts, that are purl sts on the right side).
