PATTERN OVERVIEW

The Hillock hat is a fitted textured beanie, that features Double Moss stitch. It’s an easy 4-row repeat pattern, and the hat knits up pretty quickly.

This hat is knitted from the bottom-up, in the round on circular needles, so it has no seams.

The pattern is easily adjustable to fit smaller or larger sizes.

Materials

To knit the hat you will need the following materials:

Yarn:

• 2 skeins of ALASKA by Drops (100% Wool / Aran weight/ 50g (1.08oz) / 70m (77 yds).

Needles:

• 4mm (US 6) 40 cm (16-inch) long circular needles.
• 5mm (US 8) 40 cm (16-inch) long circular needles.

Optional: You may want to use a set of 5mm (US 8) double pointed needles for the decreases.

Scissors:

• I enjoy working with peacock scissors by DMC.

Stitch markers:

Tapestry needle to weave in the ends.

Size

Women’s medium size, that fits head circumference: 54-56cm (21″-22″).

Gauge

18 stitches and 25 rows in 10x10cm (4″x4″) in Double Moss stitch after blocking using 5mm (US 8) needles.

Abbreviations

K – knit

P – purl

K2tog – knit 2 stitches together

P2tog – purl 2 stitches together

M1 – make one

Brim

With 4mm (US 6) needles cast on 84+1 stitches (a total of 85 stitches). I am using the Long Tail cast on method.

Join in the round using the invisible join method, being careful not to twist the stitches:

Step 1: Slip the first stitch from the left-hand needle to the right-hand needle purlwise.

Step 2: Bring the second stitch from the right-hand needle over the top of the first stitch (the one, that we have passed from the left needle).

Step 3: Put that slipped stitch from the right needle back to the left one. You will have 84 stitches left.

Pull on the strands to tighten it a little bit and place a marker.

Alternative: You can also cast on the required 84 stitches and join them in the round by just starting to knit, but in that case, a little gap will form in the first round.

Ribbing

Round 1: *K1, P1*, to the end of the round.

Repeat Round 1 until the ribbing measures 5cm (2 inches).

Body

Switch to 5mm (US 8) needles and evenly increase the number of stitches from 84 to 88.

Increase round: *K21, M1*, to the end of the round (88 sts).

The body of the hat is knit in Double Moss stitch.

Round 1 – 2: *K2, P2*, to the end of the round.

Round 3-4: *P2, K2*, to the end of the round.

Repeat rounds 1-4 until the hat measures 18.5cm (7.3 inches) from the cast on edge.

Crown

Round 1: *P2tog, K2*, to the end of the round (66 stitches).

Round 2: *P1, K2*, to the end of the round (66 stitches).

Round 3: *K1, P2tog*, to the end of the round (44 stitches).

Round 4: *K1, P1*, to the end of the round (44 stitches).

Round 5: *K2tog*, to the end of the round (22 stitches).

Round 6: Knit all (22 stitches).

Round 7: *K2tog*, to the end of the round (11 stitches).

FINISHING

Cut the yarn, leaving approximately a 20cm ( 8 inches) long tail. Thread the yarn onto a tapestry needle and thread it through the remaining stitches. Weave in any loose ends.

If you wish, add a faux fur pom pom or create one yourself.
