Woodland Hat knitting pattern

Hat overview

The Woodland Hat is a ribbed everyday beanie. It is knit from the bottom up in the round without seams. The hat is knit with medium-weight yarn.

The hat is really easy to knit. You will knit a long ribbed tube using circular knitting needles and shape the crown.

Gauge: 19 stitches x 28 rows = 10 x 10cm (4 x 4″ ) in stockinette stitch after blocking.

Size:

• To fit actual head circumference: Adult medium (54-56cm/ 21.25- 22″).
• Finished height: 21cm/ 8.25″ with the brim folded up 7cm (2.75″).

Supplies

To knit this hat, you will need the following supplies:

• Yarn: ~100g (3.5 oz) medium weight yarn (category #4). I used Drops Nepal in the color camel (mix 0618). It’s a blend of 65% wool and 35% alpaca. If you don’t have the mentioned yarn at hand, here are similar yarn options:

• LION BRAND Local Grown

• 4mm (US 6) 40cm (16″) circular knitting needles
• 4mm (US6)  80cm (32″) circular needles or a set of double-pointed needles (for the crown decreases).
• Tapestry needle
• Scissors
• 9 stitch markers (one for the beginning of the round, and 8 for crown decreases)

Abbreviations

CO – cast on

St (s) – stitch (es)

K – knit

P – purl

K2tog – purl two stitches together

Ssk – slip 2 stitches knitwise, put them back on the left needle, knit through back loops together

*  * – repeat from * to * until the end of the row or the stated number of times

WOODLAND HAT KNITTING PATTERN

Cast on

CO on 96 sts using the Long-tail cast-on method or the one you prefer.

Join in the round, being careful not to twist the sts (place a marker if you wish to mark the beginning of the round).

I prefer using the invisible join method:

Step 1: CO 96 + 1  extra stitch.

Step 2: Slip the first st purlwise from the left needle to the right needle.

Step 3: Bring the second st from the right needle over the top of the first st (the one that we have passed from the left needle)

Step 4: Put that slipped st from the right needle to the left needle: 96 sts left. Pull on the strands to tighten.

Turn the knitting so the wrong side of the cast-on is facing you. This way, the neat side of the cast-on will be visible when the brim is folded.

Hat

Round 1: *p1, k1* to end.

Repeat round 1 until the hat measures 21cm.

On the last round, place 8 stitch markers as follows:

12sts, PM, 1st, PM, *23sts, PM, 1st, PM* 3 times, 11 sts.

Crown

Switch to double-pointed needles or circular needles with a longer cable (for the magic loop method) when necessary.

Round 1: *Work in 1×1 rib to 2sts before marker, K2tog, P1, Ssk* 4 times, work in 1×1 rib until end.

Round 2: Work sts as they appear (knit the knit sts, purl the purl sts).

Repeat rounds 1-2 until there are 16 sts left (finish with round 1).

Finishing

Cut the yarn, leaving approximately a 15cm (6″) long tail. Thread a tapestry needle and draw the tail tightly through the remaining stitches. Weave in all loose ends.

Wet block the finished item to set the finished size and even out the stitches.

Simply soak the knitted item in lukewarm water with some soak wash for 10-15 minutes. Lift it from the water and gently squeeze the excess water out. Next, lay it on a clean towel (make sure it doesn’t transfer color), and roll it up to remove moisture.

Lay the item on a clean and dry towel (that doesn’t transfer color) and let it dry. Your knitting will look much better after this.
