Headband overview
The Amber headband is a cute accessory, that you can knit in an evening.
The headband is knitted flat (back and forth) with soft merino wool. The design features a combination of delicate lace stripes and slipped stitches.
The edges of the headband are sewn together, creating a twist, so there are no visible seams.
Measurements: To fit women’s medium (54-56 cm/ 21 3/4 – 22″).
If you are knitting for a smaller/bigger circumference just knit fewer/ more rows.
Gauge is not really important for this project.
Finished size: 10cm (4″) wide and 24.5cm (9.6″) long.

Supplies
To knit this headband you will need the following supplies:
- Yarn: ~ 30g (1.06 oz) medium weight yarn (category #4). I used Malabrigo Rios in the color camel (208). It’s 100% superwash merino wool. If you don’t have the mentioned yarn at hand, here are similar yarn options:
- Needles: 4.5mm (US7) knitting needles.
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
Abbreviations
K – knit
P – purl
K2tog – knit 2 sts together
Ssk – slip 2 sts knitwise, put them back on the left needle, knit through back loops together
Sl wyif – slip st purlwise with yarn in front
Sl wyib – slip st purlwise with yarn in back
Yo – yarn over
HEADBAND KNITTING PATTERN
Cast on
CO on 21 sts using the Long-tail cast-on method or the one you prefer.
Headband
Row 1: Sl wyif, K2, Sl wyib, P2, K2Tog, Yo, P2, Sl wyib, P2, Yo, Ssk, P2, Sl wyib, K3.
Row 2 : Sl wyif, K2, P1, K2, P2, K2, P1, K2, P2, K2, P1, K3.
Row 3: Sl wyif, K2, Sl wyib, P2, Yo, Ssk, P2, Sl wyib, P2, K2tog, Yo, P2, Sl wyib, K3.
Row 4: Sl wyif, K2, P1, K2, P2, K2, P1, K2, P2, K2, P1, K3.
Repeat rows 1 -4 until the piece measures ~50 cm (19.6″) or your desired length.
Bind off
Bind off sts knitwise.
Step 1: Knit 2, bring the first st over the second one.
Step 2: Knit the next st, bring the first st over the second one.
Repeat step 2 until you have 1 stitch left, cut the yarn leaving a 30-40cm / 12″ – 16” tail to seam the headband. Draw the yarn tail through the last stitch and pull it snug.

Twist
Step 1: With the right side facing you, bring the shorter edges closer together and fold each edge in half so they look like a “V”.
Step 2: Now insert one edge into another. Make sure, that the yarn tail is on the outside, and not in between the layers
Step 3: Stitch through all 4 layers of knit fabric back and forth.
Finishing
Weave in all loose ends, and turn the headband the right side out.
Wet blocking the finished item, this process transforms the stitches, makes them look smoother and neater.
Simply soak the knitted item in lukewarm water with some soak wash for 10-15 minutes. Lift it from the water and gently squeeze the excess water out. Next, lay it on a clean towel, and roll it up to remove moisture.
Pin the item to a blocking board or lay it on a clean and dry towel (make sure it doesn’t transfer color) and let it dry. Your knitting will look much better after this.

Bless you, what a lovely pattern! I am looking forward to making this for me and maybe for Christmas gifts. But even better, you gave us alternative yarns. I was able to find your yarn on-line but was familiar with it and had worked with 2 of the 3 alternatives you gave so I will probably go with what I know and probably have some in my stash. It is so hard determining an alternative to a yarn that isn’t available easily because you just have no idea of its personality. Off to my stash! Many thanks for a beautiful pattern.

I love this pattern but before I start I have a question. If you are repeating row one and are doing a knit two together and ssk won’t the band get smaller and smaller as you continue to knit the length? I don’t see what you do to add those two stitches back in on row two. Thank you.
Hi Toni, the number of stitches doesn’t change due to yarn overs (YO in the pattern). There is a yarn over after K2Tog and a yarn over before SSK, this way there are always 21 stitches on the needle.
Hi Mirella! I’m trying to make this lovely pattern but it isn’t coming out right. Instead of getting 2 eyelets roughly next to each other I get 1 eyelet and a bump. This happens in both “columns” where the eyelets go. Looking at your pictures I’d expect the second row of the repeat to have YOs and SSK or K2tog to form the missing eyelets. Could you please help me see why I’m only getting half the eyelets? Thank you! 🙂
