Hat overview
The Fall Sunrise Hat is worked from the bottom up in the round without seams. The brim is knit in 2×2 rib, and the design features cables.
The hat is knit with medium-weight yarn.

Gauge: 18stitches x 24rows = 10x10cm (4×4″) in stockinette stitch after blocking on larger needles.
Size:
- To fit actual head circumference: Adult small (51-53cm/20-20.85″), Adult medium (54-56cm/ 21.25- 22″), Adult large (57-59 cm/ 22.4- 23.25″).
- Finished height: 22cm/ 8.75″.

Supplies
To knit this hat you will need the following supplies:
- Yarn: ~100g (3.5 oz) medium weight yarn (category #4). I used Drops Nepal in the color goldenrod (uni color 2923). It’s a blend of 65% wool and 35% alpaca. If you don’t have the mentioned yarn at hand, here are similar yarn options:
- 4mm (US 6) 40cm (16″) circular knitting needles (for the brim).
- 4.5mm (US 7) 40cm (16″) circular knitting needles (for the body).
- 4.5mm (US7) 80cm (32″) circular needles or a set of double-pointed needles (for the crown decreases).
- Cable needle (if you don’t have a cable needle, you can substitute it with a double-pointed needle or a large enough safety pin).
- Tapestry needle.
- Scissors.
- Stitch marker.
Abbreviations
CO – cast on
St (s) – stitch (es)
K – knit
P – purl
C6B – slip 3 stitch onto cable needle and leave at back of work. Knit the next 3 stitches, then knit the 3 stitches from the cable needle.
C6B dec – slip 3 stitch onto cable needle and leave at back of work. Knit the next stitch, then knit the next 2 stitches together. Ssk the first 2 stitches from the cables needle, knit the last stitch from the cable needle.
K2tog – knit two stitches together
Ssk – slip, slip, knit
P2tog – purl two stitches together
M1R – make one right
* * – repeat from * to * until the end of the row or the stated number of times
FALL SUNRISE HAT KNITTING PATTERN
Cast on
With smaller needles, CO 80 (88, 96) sts using the Long-tail cast-on method or the one you prefer.
Join in the round being careful not to twist the sts (place a marker if you wish to mark the beginning of the round).
I prefer using the invisible join method:
Step 1: CO 80 (88) 96+ 1 extra stitch.
Step 2: Slip the first st purlwise from the left needle to the right needle.
Step 3: Bring the second st from the right needle over the top of the first st (the one, that we have passed from the left needle).
Step 4: Put that slipped st from the right needle to the left needle: 80 (88) 96 sts left. Pull on the strands to tighten.
Brim
Round 1: *P2, K2* to end.
Repeat round 1 until the brim measures 5cm/ 2″.
Body
Switch to larger needles.
Increase round: *P2, M1R, K6* to end (90, 99, 108sts).
Rounds 1-7: *P3, K6* to end.
Round 8: *P3, C6B* to end.
Repeat rounds 1-8 2 more times. Repeat rounds 1-5 1 more time.
Crown
Switch to double-pointed needles or circular needles with a longer cable (for the magic loop method) when necessary.
Round 1: *P1, P2tog, K6* to end (80, 88, 96sts).
Round 2: *P2, K6* to end.
Round 3: *P2, C6B dec* to end (60, 66, 72sts).
Round 4: *P2, K4* to end.
Round 5: *P2tog, K4* to end (50, 55, 60sts).
Round 6: *P1, K4* to end.
Round 7: *P1, K2tog, K2tog* to end (30, 33, 36sts).
Round 8: *P1, K2* to end.
Round 9: *P1, K2tog* to end (20, 22, 24sts).
Round 10: *P1, K1* to end.
Round 11: K2tog to end (10, 11, 12sts).
Finishing
Cut the yarn, leaving approximately a 15cm (6″) long tail. Thread a tapestry needle and draw the tail tightly through the remaining stitches. Weave in all loose ends.
