Shawl overview

The Dahlia Shawl will provide additional warmth on cooler summer evenings. It is knit in a blend of merino wool and cotton, which is great for spring and summer garments.

This is a top-down triangle shawl. The design features eyelet sections on a stockinette stitch background.

You will begin by knitting the garter tab. Next, you will work the body of the shawl. The triangle shape is created by making four yarn over increases every other row. They are made on both sides of the central stitch and along the top garter stitch border. When you are happy with the length of the shawl, you will work the garter stitch border, and bind off the stitches.

Finished size after blocking: 102 cm (40^1/4″) deep and 204cm (80^1/2″) wide.

Gauge: 21 stitches x 28 rows = 10 x 10cm (4 x 4″ ) in stockinette after blocking.

Supplies

To knit this shawl you will need the following supplies:

Yarn: ~ 400g (14.2oz) light worsted yarn (category #3). I used Drops Cotton Merino in the color vanilla (17). It’s a blend of merino superwash wool (52%) and cotton (48%). If you don’t have the mentioned yarn at hand, here are similar yarn options:

Abbreviations

CO – cast on

St (s) – stitch (es)

K – knit

P – purl

K2tog – knit 2 stitches together

Ssk – slip 2 stitches knitwise, put them back on the left needle, knit through back loops together

Yo – yarn over

PM – place marker

SM – slip marker

RS – right side

WS – wrong side

* * – repeat from * to * until the end of the row or the stated amount of times

DAHLIA SHAWL KNITTING PATTERN

Garter tab cast-on

Begin by knitting the garter tab cast-on:

Step 1: CO 3 sts using the long-tail cast-on. Place a removable marker in each of the 3 cast-on stitches.

Step 2: Knit 6 rows, do not turn.

Step 3: Rotate the piece 90 degrees clockwise. Pick up, and knit 3 stitches along the edge. You have 6 stitches on the needle.

Step 4: Rotate the piece 90 degrees clockwise again, pick up and knit 3 cast-on stitches, remove the markers. You have 9 stitches on the needle.

Body

The body of the shawl is worked in eyelet and stockinette stitch sections.

You will work 6 rows in stockinette stitch, 2 rows in eyelet pattern, 6 rows in stockinette stitch, and 6 rows in eyelet pattern.

The first and last three stitches are always knit on both sides to create a garter stitch border.

Stockinette stitch:

Row 1 (RS, setup row): K3, Yo, K1, Yo, PM, K1, PM, Yo, K1, Yo, K3.

Row 2 (WS): K3, P to last 3 sts, K3.

Row 3: K3, Yo, K to marker, Yo, SM, K1, SM, Yo, K to last 3 sts, Yo, K3.

Row 4: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3.

Row 5: K3, Yo, K to marker, Yo, SM, K1, SM, Yo, K to last 3 sts, Yo, K3.

Row 6: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3.

Eyelet pattern 1:

Row 7: K3, Yo, *K2tog, Yo* to one sts before marker, K1, Yo, SM, K1, SM, Yo, K1, *Yo, Ssk* to last 3 sts, Yo, K3.

Row 8: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3.

Stockinette stitch:

Row 9: K3, Yo, K to marker, Yo, SM, K1, SM, Yo, K to last 3 sts, Yo, K3.

Row 10: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3.

Row 11: K3, Yo, K to marker, Yo, SM, K1, SM, Yo, K to last 3 sts, Yo, K3.

Eyelet pattern 2:

Row 15: K3, Yo, *K2tog, Yo* to one sts before marker, K1, Yo, SM, K1, SM, Yo, K1, *Yo, Ssk* to last 3 sts, Yo, K3.

Row 16: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3.

Row 17: K3, Yo, *K2tog, Yo* to one sts before marker, K1, Yo, SM, K1, SM, Yo, K1, *Yo, Ssk* to last 3 sts, Yo, K3.

Row 18: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3.

Row 19: K3, Yo, *K2tog, Yo* to one sts before marker, K1, Yo, SM, K1, SM, Yo, K1, *Yo, Ssk* to last 3 sts, Yo, K3.

Row 20: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3.

Continue in the established pattern and work the four sections (stockinette stitch, eyelet 1, stockinette stitch, eyelet 2) six more times (a total of seven times) or until you reach your desired length.

Work one more stockinette section (six rows of stockinette stitch).

Border

The border is worked in garter stitch.

Row 1 (RS): K3, Yo, P to marker, Yo, K1, Yo, P to last 3 sts, Yo, K3.

Row 2 (WS): K3, P to last 3 sts, K3.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 two more times (a total of six rows).

Bind off

Bind off purlwise on the right side:

Step 1: K2, bring the first stitch over the second one.

Step 2: K1, bring the first stitch over the second one

Repeat step 2 until you have 1 stitch left, cut the yarn leaving a 4″ – 6” tail to weave in later. Draw the yarn tail through the last stitch and pull it snug.

Finishing

Weave in all loose ends.

Wet or steam blocking the finished shawl. This process transforms the stitches, and makes them look smoother and neater.

Simply soak the knitted item in lukewarm water with some soak wash for 10-15 minutes. Lift it from the water and gently squeeze the excess water out. Next, lay it on a clean towel, and roll it up to remove moisture.

Pin the shawl to a blocking board or lay it on a clean and dry towel (make sure it doesn’t transfer color) and let it dry. Your knitting will look neat after blocking.

The Lilac shawl is a top-down triangle shawl.

There are four yarn over increases every other row. They are made on both sides of the central stitch and along the top garter stitch border.

Shawl overview

A knit shawl is a beautiful and cozy accessory, that comes in all shapes and sizes.

This basic shawl has a triangle shape. It is knit flat in stockinette stitch and has a garter stitch border. It is shaped with symmetrical increases, so the left and right sides are identical.

The shawl is knit top-down starting from the center of the neck, making it easy to adjust the size of the finished item. You simply knit until you reach your desired length.

The shawl begins with a garter tab cast-on, that blends seamlessly with its top edge.

Finished size after blocking: 192cm/75.6” x 98cm/38.6”.

Gauge (not really important for this project): 18 stitches x 32 rows = 10 x 10cm (4 x 4″ ) in stockinette after blocking.

Learn how to knit the garter tab cast-on for a triangle shawl.

Garter tab cast-on is used to begin a top-down triangular shawl. This technique creates a small garter stitch rectangle, that looks like the garter stitch border of a traditional shawl. This way the top edge looks very smooth.

Step 1: Cast on 3 stitches using the long tail cast-on.

Step 2: Place a removable marker in each of the 3 cast-on stitches, this will help identify the cast-on stitches later.

Step 3: Now knit 6 rows. Once complete, you will have a long thin rectangle worked in garter stitch.

Step 4: Rotate the tab 90 degrees clockwise and look closely – you will see 3 purl bumps along the garter edge of the rectangle.

Pick up each bump and knit.

To do so, simply pick up the bumps with the left-hand needle, insert the right-hand needle into the first bump, wrap the yarn around the needle as if to knit, and pull it through to create a stitch. Repeat this process with the 2 remaining bumps.

You will have 6 stitches on your right-hand needle.

Step 5: Now pick up and knit the cast-on stitches – the markers will help you find them.

Again, pick up the cast-on stitches with the left-hand needle (you can take off the markers at this point), insert the right-hand needle into the first stitch, wrap the yarn around the needle as if to knit, and pull it through to create a stitch. Repeat with the 2 remaining cast-on stitches.

You will have 9 stitches on your right-hand needle.

That’s it, the garter tab cast-on is done, and you can begin knitting your new triangular shawl.
