Headband overview
The Thicket Headband is a cute accessory to keep your ears warm.
This headband is knit flat and the edges are sewn together creating a twist.
The design features mirrored cables and slipped stitches.
Size: To fit women’s medium (54-56 cm/ 213/4 – 22″).
Finished measurements:
- Width: 11cm (94.25″)
- Circumference: 50cm (19.75″).
Gauge: 10×10 cm = 17 sts x 22 rows in stockinette stitch after blocking.
Gauge is not crucial for this project.

Supplies
To knit this headband you will need the following supplies:
- Yarn: ~60g (2.2 oz) medium weight yarn (category #4). I used Big Merino from Drops in the color olive (13). It’s 100% merino wool. If you don’t have the mentioned yarn at hand, here are other yarn options:
- Needles: 5mm (US8) knitting needles.
- Cable needle. If you don’t have a cable needle, you can substitute it with a double-pointed needle or a large enough safety pin.
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
Abbreviations
CO – cast on
St (s) – stitch (es)
K – knit
P – purl
C4B – Slip 2 stitches onto cable needle and leave at back of work. Knit the next 2 stitches, then knit the stitches from the cable needle.
C4F – Slip 2 stitches onto cable needle and leave at front of work. Knit the next 2 stitches, then knit the stitches from the cable needle.
Sl – Slip st purlwise with yarn in back
* * – repeat from * to * until the end of the row or the stated amount of times
THE THICKET HEADBAND KNITTING PATTERN
Cast on
CO on 29 sts using the Long-tail cast-on method or the one you prefer.
Headband
Row 1: K2, *Sl1, P1, K4, P1, K4, P1* repeat one more time, Sl1, K2
Row 2: K2, *P1, K1, P4, K1, P4, K1* repeat one more time, P1, K2
Row 3: K2, *Sl1, P1, C4B, P1, C4F, P1* repeat one more time, Sl1, K2
Row 4: K2, *P1, K1, P4, K1, P4, K1* repeat one more time, P1, K2
Repeat rows 1- 4 until the piece measures approximately 50 cm (19.5″) or your desired length.
Bind off
Bind off sts in pattern (knit over knit stitches, purl over purl stitches).
Step 1: Work 2, bring the first st over the second one.
Step 2: Work the next st, bring the first st over the second one.
Repeat step 2 until you have 1 stitch left, cut the yarn leaving a 30-40cm / 12-16″ tail to seam the headband. Draw the yarn tail through the last stitch and pull it snug.

Twist
Step 1: With the right side facing you, bring the shorter edges closer together and fold each edge in half so they look like a “V”.
Step 2: Now insert one edge into another. Make sure, that the yarn tail is on the outside, and not in between the layers.
Step 3: Stitch through all 4 layers of knit fabric back and forth.
Finishing
Weave in all loose ends, and turn the headband the right side out.
Wet block the finished item, this process transforms the stitches, makes them look smoother and neater.
Simply soak the knitted item in lukewarm water with some soak wash for 10-15 minutes. Lift it from the water and gently squeeze the excess water out. Next, lay it on a clean towel, and roll it up to remove moisture.
Pin the item to a blocking board or lay it on a clean and dry towel (make sure it doesn’t transfer color) and let it dry. Your knitting will look much better after this.

I love this pattern, it’s going well, but I have ADHD and struggle to remember written patterns (I literally have to read the instructions for each row every time I repeat it) – just wondered if you have a visual chart for this pattern, or plan to do one? Personally I find it much easier to remember if I can picture the chart in my head, then I don’t need to keep looking at the pattern…. Thank you 🙂

Oh and one more question – where should the yarn be placed when doing the cable stitches? Should it always be at the back or does it just depend on whether the previous stitch was a knit or a purl?

The yarn stays at back of the work – just as you would typically knit, you simply cross the stitches to form a cable (but, if this is relevant, I’m a continental knitter🙂).

What is the gauge in stockinette?
Lovely pattern; what is the gauge in stockinette?
I waited too long to find the Drops yarn suggested; a10 ply yarn. I can only find 6 ply yarn. Will this affect the pattern? Thank you.
You can choose another yarn of similar weight to achieve the right gauge. For example, you could use these yarns with similar weight and fiber content: Debbie Bliss Rialto Aran, LANA GROSSA Bingo, MILLAMIA Naturally Soft Aran.
