Pattern overview

The Lavender Lane socks are simple yet very elegant socks.

These socks are knitted top down in the round on double-pointed needles (you can use circular needles and the magic loop technique).

The pattern features a 2-stitch cable, that starts from the very top of the sock and is located on the side of the leg. Cables are twisting in opposite directions.

The pattern differs for the right and left leg. Follow the instructions for both legs, unless otherwise stated.

CUFF

CO 60 stitches using the Long Tail Cast On method or the one you prefer.

TIP: Cast stitches onto 2 needles – this way the ribbing will be more elastic.

Longtail cast on

Divide the stitches evenly between 4 needles (you will have 15 stitches on each needle). Be careful not to twist the stitches starting the first round.

How to knit a square (Dutch) sock heel

Learn to knit a square or Dutch sock heel. It is basically what it sounds like: a square heel with a rectangular cap. It has a very nice fit and is really easy to work - there is literally no counting to be done after the setup!

  1. Thank you for the lovely pattern. It will be my next project after knitting stockinette then ribbed socks. Can’t wait to try a new pattern!

  2. Hi. This is my first attempt at knitting socks! I was following the pattern just fine until I got to the heel turn. As far as I can tell I should have 30 stitches. The fist row of the heel turn only accounts for 21. That’s how I’m reading it anyways… please tell me what I’m doing wrong!!!!

    1. Hi, yep, the heel can be tricky, but you are doing everything right.
When you have worked those 21 stitches (out of 30), you TURN your work and begin the next round (you will have 9 stitches left. It’s 9, not 10, because you have worked 2 stitches together).
This is how the heel forms. The idea here is to work those 10 stitches from the middle, and decrease ALL stitches from the left and right sides one by one each round.
It may look weird at the beginning, but after a couple of rounds, you will see the heel.
In this post, I explain the heel in more detail:
      https://mirellamoments.com/how-to-knit-a-square-dutch-sock-heel/

If you have more questions, don’t hesitate to ask, I’ll try to explain:)

  3. No question… Just many thanks for one of the easiest sock patterns I’ve done. I’m working on the first sock, and hope to do the next one tomorrow. Yay! Would not hesitate to but your patterns because your explanations are very clear!!

  4. How do you work the c1b? Is that not an abbreviation that should be explained? Help!

    1. Hi, to work c1b (cable 1 back) you will:
      1. Slip 1 stitch onto a cable needle and hold in the BACK of your work.
      2. Knit the next stitch on your left-hand needle.
      3. Knit the stitch off the cable needle.

  5. Do you happen to have a PDF version of this? It’s hard to follow with all the ads. Thanks!

  6. hi there! Would love to make these socks! Is there a way I can print the pattern?

    1. Hello, sorry, there is currently no printable version, all patterns are available online.

  7. Hello 👋, I just found your lovely lavender Lane sock knitting pattern today and have immediately started knitting them, but I am a little confused as we get to the leg an have to repeat rows 1-4 we are still, for the first 3 rows knitting in rib (k2 p2) but in the picture of your socks, apart from the 4 cable sts (p2 c1b p2) the remaining sts look like knitted sts! Am I reading the pattern wrong or does it all work out as it should? I love the pattern and the colour you used by the way, thank you for it 🥰

    1. Hello Debbie, it’s very nice to hear, that you like the pattern!
As for the leg portion, the pattern goes like this (for the right leg):
      Rounds 1-3: K2, P2, K2, P2, Knit to end of round
      Round 4: K2, P2, C1B, P2, Knit to end of round
So you are not repeating the 4 cuff rounds, but working 4 new rounds. So for the first 3 rounds you will- K2, P2, K2, P2 (these are the 8 cable stitches, that are worked exactly like 2×2 rib), but then you will knit the remaining 52 stitches. You will cross the cable every 4 rounds. And the cable will be as pictured on a stockinette background.
      Hope this helps!
